Hannah Cassidy says she hopes to travel the world, helping children and orphans in developing countries.
“I just feel in Canada, we’re so lucky,” the 16-year-old Port Elgin resident said in an interview Monday.
“I feel like I should give back.”
Cassidy was named one of 15 finalists Sunday at the Miss Teen Ontario-World pageant in Toronto.
She now advances to compete at the Miss Teen Canada-World pageant in Toronto in July.
The Miss Teen Canada-World organization raises money for the “children helping children” network Free the Children and also awards pageant contestants with trips to volunteer at the charity’s development projects in poor countries around the world.
Cassidy said she is hoping to be selected for that opportunity.
The Miss Teen Ontario-World competition was Cassidy’s first pageant. The St. Mary’s High School student said she found out she would be competing only two weeks ahead of the event.
Finalists were chosen based on a written application, which was submitted beforehand, along with the results of interviews with judges, a swimsuit runway competition and an evening gown walk on pageant day.
Cassidy said she was surprised with her success, considering the little notice she received that she would be competing.
She said she is excited about the nationals.
“It’s like a little girl’s dream come true mixed with the opportunity to help others,” she said.
